Working in the AI Writer: editor and chat

How to write and format in the editor, how to use AI right in your text, and how to get the most out of the chat next to your document.

1. Editor basics

Writing and formatting

The toolbar above your document has everything for formatting: block type (paragraph, headings, quote), bold, italic, underline, highlight, alignment, line height, lists, checklists, indentation and tables. On narrow screens, some of it moves into More.

If you prefer the keyboard, you can format while you type:

Type You get
#   ##   ###   + space Heading 1, 2, 3
-   or *   + space Bulleted list
1.   + space Numbered list
>   + space Quote
---   Divider
**text**   / *text*   Bold / italic

The / menu

Type /   anywhere to open the block menu. Keep typing to filter, for example /table  . It offers text, headings, quote, code block, bulleted, numbered and to-do lists, table and divider.

The + button

Hover over a block and a + appears to its left. Click it to add a new block below; hold Option   (Mac) or Alt   (Windows) while clicking to add it above. It opens the same / menu, so you choose the block type right away.

The block handle ⋮⋮

Next to the + you'll find the handle.

  • Drag it to move a block (or several selected blocks) to a new position.
  • Click it to open the block menu: Ask AI, Delete, Duplicate and Turn into (paragraph, heading 1 to 3, quote).

Saving, word count, export

  • Autosave: everything is saved automatically. The top bar shows Saving… and Saved.
  • Word count: at the right end of the toolbar. Click it to switch to characters. Select text to see the characters of just that selection.
  • Export: the download icon offers HTML, PDF and Word (.docx).

2. AI in the editor

You don't have to leave your text to use AI. The AI in the editor works directly on the block or text you're on, and it uses the Brand Voice and target audience you set for the document.

Open the AI menu

  • Select text and click AI in the small toolbar that appears.
  • Press Space   on an empty line.
  • Click AI in the main toolbar, or Ask AI in the block handle menu.
  • Shortcut: Option   + Enter   on Mac, Alt   + Enter   on Windows.

Then type what you want ("make this more concrete", "write an intro about …") or pick an action. What you see depends on where you are:

Where you are Actions
Text selected Continue, Rewrite (with a tone of voice), Summarize, Expand, Optimize, Command, Translate into…, Custom actions
Empty line Continue, Custom actions, plus ideas to get started
Empty document Brainstorm ideas, Create outline, Write social media post

The result appears as a suggestion first. You decide: Replace (or Insert), Insert below, Try again or Discard. Esc   stops a running answer.

Continue writing

The round button at the bottom of the editor continues your text from the cursor (or the end of the document). Hover over it to see Continue writing. Shortcut: ⌘   + J   on Mac, Alt   + W   on Windows. The document needs a few words first.

Suggestions with Tab

At the end of a paragraph, press Tab   (or Ctrl   + Space  ) and the AI suggests how the sentence could go on, shown in grey. Then:

  • Tab   accepts the suggestion,
  • ⌘/Ctrl   + →   accepts just the next word,
  • Esc   dismisses it.

Suggestions only appear when you ask for them, never while you're typing.

3. Editor and chat together

Open the chat with the Chat icon on the right edge of the document. It's the same chat as on the home page (more about the chat), but next to your document.

When to use which

Use the chat for Use the AI in the editor for
Thinking things through: briefing, research, web search, outlines, first drafts Working on a specific passage: rewrite, shorten via Command, expand, translate
Asking your Digital Twins how your text lands Continuing a sentence or paragraph in flow
Questions about the whole document ("is the structure clear?", "proofread this") Changes you want to see in place, as Replace or Insert

Good to know: the chat can read your whole document, including text you haven't saved yet. It does not see what you've selected. If you mean a specific passage, paste it or name it ("the second paragraph").

One chat per document

  • Every document has its own chat. When you open the document again, the chat opens with it, with the full history.
  • The chat gets a name automatically after your first message. If your document is still "Untitled", it takes on that name too. A name you set yourself always stays.
  • Brand Voice and target audience you choose in the chat also apply to the document.

Getting chat answers into your document

  • Click Copy to document under an answer, or double-click the answer. It's inserted with formatting where your cursor is.
  • Copy puts it on your clipboard instead.
  • Not quite right? Refresh regenerates the answer.

4. Best practices

  1. Set Brand Voice and target audience first. Both the chat and the AI in the editor use them, so every result sounds like you and speaks to the right people from the start.
  2. Brief the chat, then refine inline. Use the chat for the big moves: goal, audience, key messages, outline, first draft. Bring the result in with Copy to document and polish it in the editor, passage by passage.
  3. Work per section, not per document. Instead of regenerating the whole text, select the paragraph that isn't working and use Rewrite, Expand or Command. You keep what's already good.
  4. Let the chat read your document. Ask "what's missing in my text?" or "proofread my document". The chat reads the current version, so you don't need to paste anything.
  5. Test before you publish. Ask your Digital Twins in the chat how your headline or offer lands, then adjust the text in the editor.
  6. Keep one topic per document. Because the chat belongs to the document, its history stays focused and useful when you come back later.

5. Keyboard shortcuts

On Windows, use Ctrl   where Mac uses ⌘  .
